The Most Popular Types of Drawing Machines Today
In a quest for the invention of a robotic machine capable of drawing independently or with an accompaniment of humans, have traditionally faced the difficulty: how long have artists used drawing machines for the support or their extension in their art? And, exactly where and when was the first artistic use of a drawing machine recorded? The Pre-matical: A Pre-matical (also known as a pictorial representation) is a type of drawing in which shapes are superimposed on one another. It typically employs a flat vertical line and no texture. The earliest Pre-matical drawings, usually referred to as "pastoral", appeared around the 12th century in Italy. They frequently employ two or more basic geometrical forms such as a straight line drawing or a grid pattern.
The Stylus: A stylus is a pointing device similar to a pen or pencils on which a brush can be written. The stylus has a concave surface allowing for precise maneuvering of the tip for applying makeup and other tasks. Many early styluses have a handle resembling a pen; later versions have a more ergonomic design. Early versions usually have only two or three drawing machines along with an attached canvas where a stencil may be applied. The stylus was employed to create complex brush strokes.
The Linear Perspective: Also known as the Stencil perspective, the Linear Perspective is actually a more accurate version of the Pre-matic. Unlike the Pre-matic, where a straight edge is used to give a perspective view, in a linear perspective the drawing machines have a much finer cross-sectional area. This creates a much larger area where various shapes can be laid out. The linear machines also have mechanical hands that allow for precise manipulation of individual lines and shapes. These types of drawing machines are still often found in commercial studios.
Camera Lucida: The camera lucida machines use a mirror to focus light into a subject. Rather than using a Stylus or a brush, the operator uses an optical device located behind the camera. The camera lucida is a much more complex piece of equipment and is most commonly seen in architectural firms or large museums. These types of drawing machines usually have up to four different machines, each capable of running on different software.
Modern drawing machines have made many different aspects of modern drawing possible. Previously the only way to produce high quality art would be by means of brush and canvas. Now, drawing is more easily done with the use of computers and CAD programs. Computer aided drawing has opened up the possibility of producing detailed, realistic drawings to a new degree. The techniques that are now available have increased the flexibility of artists as well as the ability to produce art that people can enjoy for generations to come.
